Not only consoling but “comforting himself” (NCV), all the while “plotting vengeance” (MSG). As always, Rebekah had a surefire solution.

“Now then, my son, do what I say:…” Genesis 27:43

Third time’s the charm for that line. Of course, if Jacob hadn’t done what his mother said in the first place, he wouldn’t be in such a fix.

Wouldn’t you love to climb inside Rebekah’s head? Wheels and gears must have spun in constant motion. Part of me admires her quick-witted style, always ready with plan B, C, or D. I love a woman who can think on her feet, adjust her plans on the fly, do whatever it takes to make things happen. Yet I cringe when I look at the emotional carnage around this queen of control—her distraught husband, her furious son. The woman “greatly underestimated the range of the mischief she had caused.”33

Did she tend to their wounds later? We’re not told in Scripture. At that moment Rebekah’s only concern was saving Jacob’s life.
